The Essence of Water – Solo show at Inis Gluaire Art Centre September 2022
This project was an investigation into the water sources of the holy wells of Ireland and people’s response to them. Recorded in the publications ‘Water and the Sublime’ and ‘Research Process Journal’ can be seen in the Publications tab. They document the art work and the research process of the project.
Using my earlier practice as a documentary photographer I extensively photographed each site, above and below the water, I recorded the eco sounds and infra sounds within the water, and I collected water samples for microscopic work in the lab. I used abstract photography to capture images of water that are significantly different from what is traditionally considered photographic images of water. Through ethnographic interviews and the creation of a focus group, of people I met at the holy wells, I discovered a deeper understanding of the human water relationship. The sound recordings and microscopic photography were new to my practice and have become an important part of my ongoing investigation and experimentation within my practice and led to the creation of my first installation piece ‘Bridgit’s Well’.
I used the Drop Evaporation Method to microscopically photograph the ‘face’ of the water samples from each holy well, discovering that each water source had its own ‘face’ as can be seen in ‘The Face of Water’ tab.
